TINTAGEL GALLERY
Tintagel Castle is set on a dramatic and picturesque headland that is virtually an island, connected to the mainland by a slim finger of land.

The Castle is most famous for its association with legendary British King, Arthur. It is claimed that this was his birthplace, from where Merlin took him to be fostered in secret.

The area is known to have been occupied by the Romans for tin mining, but it is as a Royal stronghold of the Cornish Kings during the 5th & 6th centuries that the legend takes hold.

The castle was originally joined by a causeway to the mainland but erosion has destroyed much of the causeway and access is now by two steep stairways.

Although the earliest parts of the present castle date only form about 1145, the remains of an ancient Celtic monastery survive nearby. Over the centuries much of the castle has fallen into the sea and very little remains today.
